vo·li·tion·ary

/vōˈliSH(ə)nˈary/

noun

In the dynamic landscape of the music scene, where external forces often exert artificial pressures on creativity, there emerges a band that stands as a testament to the unwavering power of will and intentionality. Enter Volitionary, a musical force born out of a conscious choice to exist, create, and thrive on the pure essence of personal volition.

Formed by Nathan Coles as a solo project during the 2020 pandemic with a singular purpose in mind, Volitionary embraces its name as a declaration of intent. The members, (Mak Mattis on drums and Dove Cline on bass guitar) driven by a shared commitment to remain true to their artistic values, have crafted a sound that echoes the authenticity derived from the deliberate exercise of free will.

Volitionary explores the intricate and avant-garde realm of math rock, delivering a sonic experience that embraces the unorthodox. Drawing inspiration from pioneers of the genre such as; TTNG and Toe, Volitionary invites the challenge of navigating the nuanced landscapes of math rock, immersing themselves in the unconventional and the beauty within the complexities of the musical equation.

Volitionary's inaugural performance marked not just a musical debut but a powerful statement of purpose. Taking a stand at the intersection of music and activism, the band's premiere unfolded as a benefit show for local climate action groups called "Do The Math". In a harmonious blend of artistry and advocacy, Volitionary seized the opportunity to raise awareness about the imminent dangers of climate change and the pressing need for collective action.
